Wolverhampton Wanderers made a profit of £18.4 million over the period covering the 2020-21 season, their latest accounts show. The campaign was badly hit by the pandemic with just a solitary Molineux match where a limited number of supporters could attend. Wolves estimate they lost almost £19 million due to the impact of COVID-19, as a result of lost matchday income and a rebate of Premier League broadcast money. The accounts also reflect Wolves’ recruitment from the summer of 2020 when they sold Diogo Jota and Matt Doherty and bought Fabio Silva and Nelson Semedo. Their total net spend on transfers was £10.8 million. They spent £71.5 million on Silva, Semedo, Ki-Jana Hoever, Fernando Marcal and Toti Gomes. Many of the total transfer fees — Semedo’s fee could reach a total of £37 million — will be spread over the coming years. Wolves also sold Helder Costa to Leeds and received payments for Ivan Cavaleiro — a bonus after Fulham won promotion — and Pedro Goncalves — a sell-on clause when he moved from Famalicao to Sporting, with sales and fees bringing in £60.8 million. Again some of the total fees, like Jota’s, have not been received yet. For example, it’s believed Wolves only received an initial payment of £4 million for the potential total £45 million Jota sale to Liverpool.
