Most rough sleepers could only dream of calling a Premier League football club's ground 'home', even for one night. Now, Crystal Palace FC has opened open the doors of Selhurst Park to those who need it most in a bid to help the homeless this winter. With recent predictions placing bets on a return of the Beast from the East, the race is on to protect London's rough sleepers. Croydon Council has joined forces with the football club to arrange emergency accommodation for when temperatures are predicted to drop below freezing. Up to 10 people formally identified as homeless will be invited to stay in a lounge at Selhurst Park, where camp beds are to be set up for the needy guests. There will also be a much-needed hot meal provided, breakfast, and washing facilities. The next morning the space is converted back into a lounge, but the council’s Gateway homelessness prevention service and Thames Reach support workers will be on hand to offer longer-term accommodation, financial advice and help with any medical needs, Croydon Council said. The temporary shelter was used for the first time on Thursday (January 17), and eight rough sleepers were given a bed in the club. If Selhurst is busy because of a home match, Croydon Council has said it will keep referring those in need to other homeless shelters in Croydon and central London.
